Live Capture of Mosquitos
Allowing for identification of mosquito type and also allowing for checking pathogen type (Malaria, Yellow Fever, Denge Fever, etc) – Ricardo Figueirdo, Angola

Mosquito borne diseases are endemic to Africa, South America and Asia. Identification of mosquito type and disease type will allow for better utilization of manpower and funds for eradication by either destroying habitat or destroying the mosquitos.

The malaria parasite carried by the female Anopheles mosquito is a world leading cause of mortality (World Malaria Report, WHO, 2013) especially in children under the age of five. Over 200 million cases a year are reported and more than half a million deaths are estimated as a result (World Malaria Report, WHO, 2013).

Many of the viral diseases (yellow fever, dengue fever, zika fever) are transmitted by Aedes Aegypti mosquitos. Other viral diseases including Japanese encephalitis and West Nile virus are carried by several different mosquitos (Wikipedia).

Ricardo Figueirdo developed a machine (patent number 3.395A. IAPI Angola) to capture live mosquitos and with the support of Jose Eduardo dos Santos University (Angola) and tropical disease doctor (Marta) were able identify both the mosquitos use the mosquito blood to identify the type of pathogen being carried by specific mosquitos.

They were then able to chart mosquito population and pathogen type by area helping to be more effective in combating both.

The idea was presented in Nuremberg Germany at the iENA (international trade fare of ideas, inventions, and new products) . . . (see attached photos and video presentation) where Ricardo won a gold medal for his idea and his research regarding. “Mosquito Collector for testing for malaria, yellow fever, and zika virus etc.” Ricardo Augusto Antunes Figueiredo, number 411, in October, 2016.

We are in America to seek funding for manufacturing these machines as we further our work and study with the goal of establishing a countrywide distribution process. We believe this may change the way we fight against the mosquito-borne pathogens and hope this study will help eliminate or significantly reduce incidences and deaths of this nature.
